DOINK! Chocobo Races 2012
December Theme: AUs and Crossovers
December Bonus Bonus: Rec Lists

Administrative Bits
  • If you haven't yet chosen your team, make sure you sign up here if you want your work to count for points!
  • Confused? Need a refresher on the rules? Wondering how to post? Get more information about Chocobo Racing here.
  • You can browse the Chocobo Down list at any time!

December's Bonus Theme(s!)
For December, we'll be giving bonus points for above-and-beyond creativity -- AUs and Crossovers will earn extra points!
  • "AU" (Alternate Universe) is the most common term, but for December, any exploratory-type different-setting-type work will earn bonus points. This includes Alternate Universe (changing something in canon; what-if types), Alternate Reality (moving characters to a different setting or canon), those fics where everyone is a werewolf... the more creative, the better. If you want to know whether something would count, just ask!

  • Crossovers between FF canons as well as crossovers with other canons (in any media) are welcome! We would ask that crossovers branch out at least outside of a compilation canon (example: fanart crossing FFVII:OGC/FFVII:Advent Children would not count, but fanart crossing FFIV/FFVII:OGC would count).

In addition, since December is a month of holidays, and holiday prompts/memes, and holiday exchanges, there's one more way you can earn bonus points this round, and that's by making rec posts. Please check last year's post to see our guidelines on recs!

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that fits the theme of AU/AR/etc or Crossover will receive 10 points.
  • Rec posts or comments containing 3 or more recs will receive 5 points each, up to a 15 point max for recs.
  • Any work that doesn't fit the November theme, but is submitted in November, will still receive 5 points.
  • Remember that you have to be signed up for a team before you post your work in order to get points!

What prompts are eligible for this month?

What if there isn't anything in the Chocobo Down Database that I want to create for? What if I want to ask for something else?
There are definitely some existing prompts for crossovers, AUs, what-ifs, etc. already in our CD Database! Usually these prompts are really difficult to match, so please take a look and see if you can make someone's unfilled fandom dream come true?

Since this month opens up new options for canon exploration, we'll open the prompt post sooner than usual this time. Look for it in a couple days!

Some reminders for this round:
  • Please include the prompt you are filling somewhere when you post your work!
  • Since the mods can't guarantee we have the time to look at every work ourselves, please make sure you label your work appropriately, so that we know who gets bonus points and who doesn't!

Ready, Set, Go... Let's mix it up again! The December Chocobo Races are open!

We only had one submission this month, but it was an amazing one that earned bonus points for going above and beyond. We encourage everybody to go check it out:

You Are Rogue Tomato! (9104 words) by faviconStealth_Noodle
Chapters: 28/28
Fandom: Final Fantasy XII
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Rogue Tomato, Original Characters
Summary:

Take on the role of Rogue Tomato in a thrilling Choose Your Own Adventure story that uses AO3's chaptering system in ways it was never meant to be used! Travel the world! Make friends! Die absurdly!

That leaves our competition here:

In first place,

Team Ifrit with 160 points

In second place,

Team Ramuh with 120 points

In third place,

Team Shiva with 20 points

Also, we had an exciting weekend -- for the first time ever, all three of your DOINK! Mods were in the same room together! We made nachos and drank things and had a great time, and we decided to take an offical mod photo for anyone in the community who wants to celebrate our big meetup with us.

DOINK! Mod Team )

Stay tuned -- we'll be announcing December's theme in just a bit!

November's bonus theme is Mixing Up The Media - if you can't find a prompt that fits what you want to do, or you have specific ideas for a certain unique media you haven't been able to ask for before, you can leave those prompts here!

To leave a prompt:
  • Please put the canon and character(s) in the subject of the comment. FFVI: Edgar & Sabin, or FFVII (OGC): Cid, or FFVIII: Rinoa/Quistis are examples.

  • Leave the details of your prompt in the comment. "Anything goes" usually isn't as helpful as you'd think - even if it's true! - so please try to add some optional details or ideas for people who might want a pointer.

  • Since this is an Alternate Media month, please leave some details that can be used for fanart, fanvids, FSTs, or other mixed media -- time to think outside the box!

  • You can leave as many prompts as you wish, although we would ask you to stick to 5 prompts to keep things manageable. If you manage to fill a prompt this month, however, we invite you to come back and leave more prompts of your own!

Have fun, and prompt away!

November Theme: Mixing Up The Media!

Administrative Bits

November's Bonus Theme
Since many fans participate in NaNoWriMo during the month of November - and many fans who don't are otherwise cheering on friends - we've decided to mix things up this month. Bonus points will be given for any work done in a media different than traditional fanfiction. What exactly does this cover? Well, first, the obvious:
  • Fanart
  • Fanvids
  • Manipulations + Original Writing (for example, an edited screenshot or series of screenshots with some poetry)
  • Mixed Media work (stories told through graphics, such as a story told as a series of post-it notes, etc)
  • Documentations (for example, a poster, magazine cover or article, etc)

In addition to that, we will also be including a few options for those of you who are strictly writers-only: non-traditional forms of fanfiction are included in the list of things that get you bonus points, such as:
  • Poetry
  • Scripts or screenplay/stage play/movie style
  • Epistolary fic (letters - also could include email/texting fic)
  • Heavily formatted or format-dependent stories

Please note -- this is not an all-inclusive list of every kind of non-traditional fanwork! Please leave suggestions in the comments - especially if you have a great idea - we'll gladly add it to the list (as long as we consider them all equivalent)!

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that fits the theme of Mixing Up The Media will receive 10 points. Because various forms of various media have various 'standards', there will be no strict quality standards this month. We just ask that you make your work equivalent to ~500 words of fanfic -- whatever you consider that benchmark to be.

Since this month opens up new options for fun media, we'll open the prompt post sooner than usual this time.

  • For this month, please make sure you use labels and tags to identify your work as a non-traditional media or a non-traditional format (ie, tagging as "Epistolary" on AO3). This will help us tally points faster!

Ready, Set, Go... Let's mix it up! We haven't had a piece of fanart submitted yet -- let's change that! The November Chocobo Races are open!

Sorry for the delay in posting! This month we had another 6 works posted!

In first place:

Team Ifrit, with 145 points total (25 points this month)

In second place:

Team Ramuh, with 120 points total (30 points this month! October winners!)

In third place:

Team Shiva, with 20 points total (0 points this month)

Teams Ifrit and Ramuh are once again battling it out -- Ifrit still has the lead, but Ramuh hasn't given up yet! Team Shiva needs to start hauling in some major points - maybe November will be the month Shiva needs to shine!

Stay tuned -- November's challenge will be posted shortly, and it's something quite different~!

October's theme is Gen and Friend Month, but if you can't find the perfect prompt in our existing Chocobo Down database, here is a post where you can leave new prompts and look for ideas.

Please leave your prompts for Gen and Friend Month here - anyone can prompt, anyone can fill!

To leave a prompt:
  • Please put the canon and character(s) in the subject of the comment. FFVI: Edgar & Sabin, or FFVII (OGC): Cid, or FFVIII: Rinoa and Quistis are examples.

  • Leave the details of your prompt in the comment. "Anything goes" usually isn't as helpful as you'd think - even if it's true! - so please try to add some optional details or ideas for people who might want a pointer. Since this is Gen and Friend month, it's a chance for you to focus on friendships you've always wanted to explore, epic adventures you'd love to see sketched out, rivalries you think could use some color -- anything goes!

  • Since this is Gen and Friend month, we would prefer that prompts not be focused on pairings/relationships.

  • You can leave as many prompts as you wish, although we would ask you to stick to 5 prompts to keep things manageable. If you manage to fill a prompt this month, however, we invite you to come back and leave more prompts of your own!

October's Bonus Theme
This month is Gen and Friend Month! We're giving bonus points for work focusing on stuff that isn't romantic or sexual: we want your buddy fic, and your dangerous adventuring fanarts, and your introspective character explorations, and your loyal BFF fanvids! Any work focusing on the awesome platonic relationships between characters, or "gen" work (work whose focus is on things other than relationships in general), will be getting a full 10 points this month. Last month we were all about the makeouts -- this month is the opposite. Awesome friendships, stirring rivalries, brotherly and sisterly bonds, dramatic party loyalties: we want it all!

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that fits the theme of Gen and Friend Month will receive 10 points.
  • Any work that doesn't fit the October theme, but is submitted in October, will still receive 5 points.
  • Remember that you have to be signed up for a team before you post your work in order to get points!

What prompts are eligible for this month?

What if there isn't anything in the Chocobo Down Database that I want to create for? What if I want to ask for something else?
Just like last month, we'll open an entry for prompts in about one week. This way everybody can look through our unfilled prompt list first and get started there, before we generate new prompts.

Some reminders for this round:
  • Please include the prompt you are filling somewhere when you post your work!
  • Since the mods can't guarantee we have the time to look at every work ourselves, please make sure you label your work appropriately, so that we know who gets bonus points and who doesn't!

September's theme is Makeout Month, but if you can't find the perfect prompt for that kink you want or that relationship you're dying to see in our existing Chocobo Down database, here is a post where you can leave new prompts and look for ideas.

Please leave your prompts for Makeout Month here - anyone can prompt, anyone can fill!

To leave a prompt:
  • Please put the canon and character or ship in the subject of the comment. FFVI: Edgar/Setzer, or FFVII (OGC): Aerith/Tifa, or FFVIII: Laguna/Kiros/Ward are examples.

  • Leave the details of your prompt in the comment. "Anything goes" usually isn't as helpful as you'd think - even if it's true! - so please try to add some optional details or ideas for people who might want a pointer. Since this is Makeout Month, please make sure your prompts will help a Chocobo Racer meet those requirements -- ask for anything from kissing to kinky, whatever suits you.

  • You can leave as many prompts as you wish, although we would ask you to stick to 5 prompts to keep things manageable. If you manage to fill a prompt this month, however, we invite you to come back and leave more prompts of your own!

September's Bonus Theme
This month is Makeout Month -- meaning any work that gets a little bit frisky gets bonus points during September! Anything from a kiss to a kink counts for the bonus, whether it's demure or down-and-dirty, so feel free to interpret those prompts any way you want.

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that fits the theme of Makeout Month will receive 10 points.
  • Any work that doesn't fit the September theme, but is submitted in September, will still receive 5 points.

What if I don't like creating work with makeouts?
  • You can fill any of the prompts in any way, and still get points for your team! Even without the bonus, your points are important!
  • Next month will be right up your alley. ;)

Some reminders for this round:
  • Please include the prompt you are filling somewhere when you post your work!
  • Since the mods can't guarantee we have the time to look at every work ourselves, please make sure it's obvious that your piece contains makeouts in the headers (label with a pairing, a kink, etc) - this makes our lives easier.
  • This has the potential to be a kink-heavy month, which is awesome! Because not all kinks are everyone's cup of tea, please be extra conscious about your labeling, especially if you are gifting your work to the prompter.
  • All kinks are welcomed and encouraged this month. Let's all be awesome to each other about this.

Ready, Set, Go... Let's see some makeouts!

Congratulations, racers! The first month of Chocobo Racing is complete, and wow, we have started off strong. We have 17 works earning points this month.

In first place:

Team Ifrit: 90 points

In second place:

Team Ramuh: 60 points

In third place:

Team Shiva: 20 points

Team Ifrit has started off strong! But Team Ramuh is not too far behind; Team Shiva may be struggling a bit, but with a good showing next month, they can easily catch up. It's still anyone's game!

Just some reminders for everyone:
  • Please make sure you include the prompt that you are writing for somewhere when you post your work! (On AO3, there's a Notes section; on LJ or DW, please include it with your headers.) You should be filling a legitimate Chocobo Down or Chocobo Racing prompt for your work to count for points! We may not have been clear on this, so we were generous with our points delivery this month, but for future reference: please include the actual prompt you are filling somewhere the mods can easily find it, for our records.

  • We had a couple works squeeze in at the end of the deadline – awesome work, guys! Don't worry about it – if you're close to the deadline and we haven't posted anything in the LJ/DW communities yet, we'll probably let you have the points. :D

Take a look under the cut – there's some amazing love for rare characters, pairings, and relationships showing up this round. Or browse all of the work here (since it all ended up on AO3 this round!).

August is Rare Character / Rare Relationship Month, and we have a lot of interesting prompts in our Chocobo Down Database -- but we know that with rare characters and rare ships, well, they're rare. There's no guarantee that there's a prompt in the database for that overlooked character or pairing you love! Because of that, we'd like to invite all of our Chocobo Racers to leave prompts for rare chars/pairs/ships here, in the comments of this post. Anyone can browse, and anyone can fill!

To leave a prompt:
  • Please put the canon and character or ship in the subject of the comment. FFVI: Edgar/Setzer, or FFVII (OGC): Scarlet, or FFVIII: Laguna/Kiros/Ward are examples.

  • Leave the details of your prompt in the comment. "Anything goes" usually isn't as helpful as you'd think - even if it's true! - so please try to add some optional details or ideas for people who might want a pointer.

  • You can leave as many prompts as you wish, although we would ask you to stick to 5 prompts to keep things manageable. If you manage to fill someone's rare character/ship wish, however, feel free to come leave as many prompts as you want!

DOINK! Chocobo Races 2012
August Theme: Rare Character / Rare Relationship Ship Month

We're ready to officially kick off the 2012 round of the DOINK! Chocobo Races – we hope you all are too!

The Official Start of the Chocobo Races
Saddle up your chocobos – the round is officially open! From now on, any work posted to our LJ ([livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange), our DW ([community profile] ff_exchange), or our AO3 collection (chocobodown2012) will count towards the races. Remember that you can post any work that fills a prompt from our Chocobo Down Database -- but you'll get bonus points for following the month's theme.

The bonus theme for August is Rare Characters / Rare Relationships. This is the theme that people were the most excited about seeing in the DOINK! Exit Poll, so we really hope to see a lot of amazing fanwork coming in!

What counts as a rare character or a rare relationship?
  • As a first start, it shouldn't be a main character or a huge pairing/ship within the fandom. (Examples of obviously big chars or pairs might be Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth; Squall/Rinoa, etc.) "It's a big/popular character/ship done in a rare way" doesn't count – this is a month to showcase smaller and unappreciated characters and relationships alike, so please don't try to squeeze by on a technicality.

  • The character or relationship has to be rare within its fandom to count. (For example, Cecil/Rosa or Rydia/Edge don't count as rare pairings just because FFIV is a small fandom, because they are fairly big pairings within the fandom. We'll have a small fandom month later when you can appreciate your bitty canons, don't worry!)

  • Within those general guidelines, we're willing to let people operate in good faith, and decide for yourself what's a rare character or a rare ship. If the mods do have to make a call on whether or not your work counts as a rare character or rare ship, we will use our own exchange history (how often has that char/ship shown up in DOINK! works?) as well as presence on archive sites (fanfiction.net and AO3 mainly). We think that's fair. If you're worried about where we'll draw the line, you can always contact the mod team and have us make the call!

But the character/relationship I want to appreciate is so rare, no one has ever prompted for them in the Chocobo Down Database. What do I do?
You'll have a chance to leave prompts for your favorite tiny characters and rare ships, so don't worry if they aren't represented! We'll open a post, where people can leave new prompts in the comments, some time next week. We want to encourage a balance between filling prompts from our database and letting people ask for new things; a week-long waiting period is our compromise.

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that fits the theme of rare character / rare relationship will receive 10 points.

  • Any work that doesn't fit the August theme, but is submitted in August, will still receive 5 points.

  • Remember that you have to be signed up for a team before you post your work in order to get points!

This round will be open for the month of August – later in the month we'll post a reminder to let you know exactly when the round will be ending.

We hope you're all ready to represent your teams! Ready, set, go… the 2012 Chocobo Races have begun!

Welcome to Chocobo Racing, everyone! September is our kick-off month, and as such, we’ve decided to start with an easy theme to get all these Chocobos warmed up and ready to go.

September’s theme is: Gift Yourself.

Find a Chocobo Down prompt that’s exactly the kind of thing you’d love to be assigned and fill it. Find a prompt that’s just the kind of gift you’d love to see and create it. Gift yourself! Whether it’s your favorite character, your comfort ship drawing that scene you’ve always wanted to see or writing that fabulous twist you always wish you were assigned. For September, the theme is to gift yourself — make something you either really want to give or really want to get.

Because this theme is uncheckable for the mods — we can’t read your fandom minds and fandom hearts! — we’re going to work on the honor system, and assume every gift that’s made fits the theme. Thus, all gifts in September will be worth 10 points. (If for some reason you want to fess up about a gift that doesn’t fit the theme to the mods, let us know and we’ll tally your non-theme gift accordingly. *g* ) Because this theme isn’t checkable, it won’t carry over to other months — ’Gift Yourself’ gets you 10 points during September only.

This makes September a GREAT month to get ahead, by the way. ;)

So here’s how to get your Chocobo Races started:
  • Browse the Chocobo Down list until you find a great prompt to work with. There are three years worth of prompts! :D

  • Create something for that prompt that fits our simple Chocobo Down Expectations.

  • Post your CD into the LJ community ([livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange), into the DW community ([community profile] ff_exchange), or into our collection on AO3. If you’re posting to LJ/DW, please use appropriate headers — we suggest these so it's easy for us to do the round up:

  • Encourage your fellow participants with comments!

  • Repeat until September’s over!

Here are the current team rosters. Friendly trash talk in the comments is totally encouraged.

Team Tonberry!

Team Cactuar!

Please let us know if we've screwed up, left you off the roster, or put you on the wrong team amidst our code juggling!

September’s theme will be open until Friday, September 30th. As the date gets closer we’ll post to let you know what time we’ll be closing and how we’ll handle the end of the first round.

Aaaaaaaaand...go, everyone! LET THE CHOCOBO RACES BEGIN!

To sign up for the Chocobo Races for October, copy the survey below, fill it out and leave it as a comment to this post. You can comment on LJ or on DW. However, we’ll be posting to both communities to reach everyone so you'll only need to sign up once. Please include your AO3 username if you intend to post your work into our AO3 collection — it will make things easier for us. :).

Note: signing up does not obligate you to post anything, but is used to give team captains an idea of how many people will be on each team.

For the October round, sign-ups will be open until the 26th. You can sign up any time before then!

This year, as well as offering Chocobo Down prompts as usual, the DOINK! mods are going to be doing something a little extra too: Chocobo Races. Chocobo Races will be a team-based competition, where each piece of Chocobo Down will count as points towards your team’s total score. You may have seen things like this done in other fandoms and communities, and we'll explain how it will work for DOINK! below!

Prepare for the race! )

If you have any questions, please comment and we'll try to answer them as soon as possible! :D The sign up post will be available shortly! Ready, set, go!
