We will be running the Kiss Battle on Dreamwidth only. There are two main reasons for this: 1) Dreamwidth’s comment limit is huge, allowing for longer kissing masterpieces; and 2) Dreamwidth still supports subject lines for comments, which are vital to a meme like the Kiss Battle. However, the Battle is open to everyone. Oh my goodness, this is brilliant! Thank you!!!

This statement is more or less applicable to any Final Fantasy game, but I always wondered what was going on with The Big Evil, Ultimecia, and what the nuances of her motivations may have been. What is she like as a person? Can we even consider her a person?

Of all of the plot gaps in this beautiful yet ridiculous game, that's the one that trips me up. I know, right?

Anyway, I keep thinking that FFVIII's story would be way more interesting if it were told from Rinoa's perspective, and I'm intrigued by what goes on between her Ultimecia. You handled this so well! I'm super-impressed.

Also, that line about "Ultimecia’s clawed feet." Wow.

I got all the way to the very last dungeon of FFVIII six or seven years ago, then stopped playing the game as my very first college finals week commenced kicking my teeth in. When that was over, I just sort of forgot about the game and started playing or reading something else. Years later, I went, "oh, right, that Final Fantasy. I wonder how that ended?" And I looked up the ending, and I watched it.

It was pretty disappointing! Your wonders RE: Ultimecia were definitely my wonders, aha.

It would definitely be more interesting if Rinoa was the perspective character. You can argue that, say, FFX's perspective being outside Yuna makes sense, since it makes some of the revelations RE: what's going on in Spira hit harder. It doesn't really do much for FFVIII, though.

Apparently I use the phrase "clawed feet" in this drabble twice, which is a little jarring. But it's pretty clear which line you're talking about. Yeah, I looked up her design because I was fuzzy on what Ultimecia actually looked like, and the, well, clawed feet definitely popped out. "Dang, I bet those would hurt," I said, and then there was no stopping it.

"You know, if I hadn’t known it was the two of you, I’d have cast Scourge before you had a chance to speak the second spell," Larsa says conversationally the moment that Penelo removes the Float from him, before she can cast Esuna to get rid of the Immobilize/Blind that she and her partner have (wholly unnecessarily) added.

Speaking first gives him the advantage, but he has to admit a certain disappointment in not getting to see Vaan’s face at this admission; he’ll have to make do with the older boy’s wordless disappointed cry and Penelo’s rueful chuckle of "Told you!" before she does the Esuna.

As least Larsa is treated to the ever-amusing sight of Vaan scratching his head awkwardly. "Awww," he says.

Penelo puts her arms about Larsa’s shoulders. "Well, this way you at least have a little plausible deniability if anyone asks you about skipping out on those awful ceremonies."

"Or I would as long as no one with the wit to use Libra--- and this is Archadia--- notices you didn’t have me Silenced," Larsa can’t resist retorting, even though he’s putty in Penelo’s hands when she hugs him like this.

"It’s not as if we’d kidnap you without your consent," she scolds. "And I’ll silence you, all right---" she adds, leaning down to kiss him.

He might try to be a better man than his late brother, but he knows he’s not a slyer one: the smirk on his face when they come up for air gives him away, and he knows it, even before she swats him. "You had that in mind, didn’t you?"

"I am a Solidor," he points out ruefully. It’s much on his mind, today of all days.

Today. The celebration of the seventh anniversary of his re-instatement of the Senate, bare months after he’d taken the throne--- which he knows all too well is also in some quarters a celebration of his brother’s death.

Penelo’s softened expression says she knows it, even as she hugs him wordlessly.

Trust Vaan, on the other hand, to put his foot in his mouth up to the femur. "Aw, c’mon, you’re nothing like Vayne!"

Penelo, Larsa is pleased to note, is already sighing in fond exasperation even as he tenses in her embrace. "So not the point, Vaan," she scolds.

Proof that Vaan has at least matured a little in seven years, for all that Larsa often feels himself the elder of them: he has the grace to look shamefaced. "Yeah, well," he says, stepping in close on Larsa’s other side so that he’s bracketed, warm and safe, by the two of them, "least we can do is get you a little break, right?"

Larsa laughs despite himself and tips his face up. "For my own, good, eh?"

"You know it," Vaan says, brightening, even as he bends to claim a kiss in turn.

Aww, you're welcome! These two are just MADE OF CUTE AND FLUFF AND ADORABLE, the fic practically wrote itself. (Seriously, I have this unnatural love for postgame-FFIX ideas--- there is just so much happy awesome there with opportunity for adventures.)

She sees he's grown up.

"I can't believe it's really been five years." Penelo stood on the edge of the balcony, a thousand stars glittering overhead. She looked back at the party in the imperial ballroom, stuffed with senators and Judges and courtiers and foreign dignitaries, all gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the emperor's coronation. And the emperor himself, standing next to her, not a hair out of place despite a face flushed from dancing. Dancing with her.

"Indeed, my lady," Larsa said. "At times, I forget just how many years have passed."

"And yet here you are." Penelo looked at the boy emperor, really looked for the first time in years. They saw each other, not as often as she would like, but often enough that she hadn't really paid attention. The boy emperor wasn't a boy anymore -- he'd grown taller than her, for one thing, maybe even taller than Vaan. And was that a shadow of beard on his cheekbones, under his chin? Almost she reached out to touch his face, but she caught her hand halfway. Instead, she turned to a passing waiter; she plucked a glass of wine off the tray balanced in his hand and raised it. "A toast," she said. "To the Emperor, to his first five years, and our hopes for fifty more."

Larsa took a glass of his own, returning the toast. "To five years of peace and friendship," he replied, "and the promise of a hundred more." They drank, and then he leaned forward and kissed her, lips sweet with wine and the eagerness of youth. She sighed, and he pulled away, swiftly.

"Apologies for my forwardness," he murmured, lowering his eyes. "I presumed upon your kindness, your friendship. It will not happen again."

Penelo shook her head and rested a hand on his chest. "It had better happen again." This time she kissed him first, and the sweetness was not all from the wine.

Throughout the game, one of the light warriors carries out a forbidden relationship with Princess Sarah. Hijinks ensue as her three companions work to keep their trysts a secret from the king and the rest of the castle.

After their lives are over, they're all together in the Lifestream again.

"You were injured today," Adia said.

Juli sighed and looks up at her companion; normally that would have been impossible, as Juli was a giant of a woman and Adia as short and slender as she was dark. But Juli had already sat down; the wound that Adia spoke of was bothering her. "It's not serious," she said, by way of explanation. "Everyone was exhausted, and we were low on supplies. I thought we could deal with it in the morning."

Avia gave her that familiar look, a single raised eyebrow and a slightly twisted smile - the one that usually came along with impossible tasks. "You needn't play the martyr, love," she answered. "I still have the strength to aid you, if it's as superficial as you say."

"I didn't want to trouble you either," she protested lamely. She should've known she couldn't hide her discomfort from her lover, anyway. Adia had the sharpest eyes of anyone she'd ever known.

"I will be untroubled once you are well." Adia sat down on the bed beside her, suddenly tiny again. "Let me see."

Juli lifted her shirt over her head and tossed it away, wincing at the way the motion pulled at the wound over her stomach. It was not so deep as to cause serious trouble, but deep enough to ache.

Adia traced over the wound with her fingers lightly, barely touching the skin. "Yes... I have more than enough magic for this," she said. "Here we go...."

The healing magic was trivial to her now. She did not even chant aloud, merely laid her hands on the wound, and Juli shuddered as the warmth of her magic worked its way into her body. She had always been fascinated by healing magic - by magic at all, in truth. She had never been able to tap into her energies; her strength was in the discipline of the body and mind, in pushing herself to the limit. Adia's power was a mystery to her, and a particularly fascinating one.

The wound knitted before her eyes, leaving only the slightest scar, and the warmth lingered in her body. Juli found herself breathing hard as it spread through her, comfortable and soft, wakening her.

The effect of her magic, or perhaps nearly her touch, was never lost on Adia, and Juli could see a small smile on her face. "That's taken care of," she said softly, brushing her white hair back from her face. "Is there anything else you would ask of me?"

Juli nodded, breathing slowly and carefully to keep herself calm. If there was one thing she had learned, it was control. "Yes," she answered, moving Adia's hands to her breasts, a small softness over solid muscle.

Adia's smile widened as her fingers traced circles around Juli's nipples. "As you wish."

Juli hissed as frost began to form around her breasts, inching closer and closer to her nipples, already brown and sensitive. The sudden chill sends shivers down her spine, but the heat in her body was unquenchable. She held perfectly still as the frost inched closer and closer, her only appreciation in her heavy breaths. The chill stopped just short of covering her nipples completely, leaving them erect and exposed, and when Adia leaned in and took one of them in her warm mouth, Juli allowed herself the slightest moan of pleasure.

Adia's free hand brushed over her back, and she could feel the heat there, like the drops of wax from a burning candle. Juli finally moved, spreading her legs only slightly, giving her lover enough access to slip a hand and rub her gently through the cloth.

It was all just enough to excite her, not enough to push her over the edge, and some nights they would drag this out forever, Adia bringing her to the brink and letting her fall back, only to push her there again. But Juli was impatient; it had been a difficult day, and she had not realized how badly she needed this, needed to lose control at the hands of her love. "Please," she said, looking down at Adia, meeting her eyes when she glanced up. "Please."

Adia pulled back from her breasts and moved up to kiss her lips, and her hand slipped up and under her pants, and Juli held her tightly and surrendered to the feel of it, the heat against her back and the magical ice against her breasts and the softness of Adia's lips.... It ended quickly, but explosively, leaving Juli panting and shaking and finally still, wrung out and exhausted.

Adia looked down at her, and Juli could see her smirk. "Is this truly why you waited so long?"

"Maybe," Juli answered, stroking her back. "What about you?"

Adia shook her head. "Not tonight, love. But I'm glad to see you finally untroubled. Perhaps you should allow me to remove my travelling garments before we sleep, hmm?"

"I suppose," she said, pulling her hands away. "Please, be quick."

Adia caught her hand and kissed it before standing up. "Always."
