Fanart, fanfiction, drabbles, doodles, live action movies -- whatever you want to supply, we’d like to have it.

We will be running the Kissing Battle on Dreamwidth only. There are two main reasons for this: 1) Dreamwidth’s comment limit is huge, allowing for longer kissing masterpieces; and 2) Dreamwidth still supports subject lines for comments, which are vital to a meme like the Kiss Battle. However, the Battle is open to everyone. Your forest.

At the very edge of the Golmore Jungle, Fran stops and looks back.

The others go on; all save Balthier, who stops at her side. (He is only selfish and self-absorbed when it doesn't matter, she has found; when it counts, when she needs him, he is the best partner an exiled viera, who is thus viera no more, could wish.) "Missing your forest?" he asks lowly.

She tilts her head. "It is my forest no longer," and with the words, giving voice to the truth she had tried so hard to ignore, to forget, the tears slip over her lashes.

A gentle hand tugs at one of her ears--- they are sensitive, so sensitive, but Balthier's hands have always been deft enough, from the first--- and she bends to him. Wordlessly, he takes her face in his hands, kisses her forehead lightly. She leans her head against his, taking comfort from the touch, grateful that he does not try to use words to soothe what cannot be soothed.

He knows. He too is exiled by his own will, making of himself orphan and alien and else, and he knows that there are no words for it, for the empty aching place inside where home should be.

Except that it is not so aching, nor so empty, while he is there to fill it; and she knows she does as much for him.

When she stirs, finally, her need for solace slaked, he leans back, shakes himself slightly, and is every inch the sky pirate, the "leading man" that he likes to style himself. "Come on, bunny rabbit," he says, the half-mocking pet name for her that she only tolerates under specific circumstances--- such as when the annoyance is a welcome relief; such as now--- "we've an empire to topple."

He saunters off, and she follows him, thinking that she is more fortunate than he is.

The wood, after all, will still be here, though she return to it not; and it is hardly her lot to burn it down.

Thank you! This prompt kind of wrote itself for me, after having but recently played through the Eruyt Village and the Draklor Labs--- they are both such, well, "grownup orphans" together, having renounced their homes for the sake of their own beliefs--- and both feeling the loss.

(Which is not to say that I didn't see the more suggestive interpretation of Fran's, um, forest, which I hope someone with a better ear for Fran/Balthier than mine writes--- I love them best as something that has him, against all his reputation as a "philanderer", being able to connect with her at a level that does not involve what a Viera's physical appearance probably tends to evoke in lots of hume men, if that makes sense--- as in, he knows her appearance does not necessarily have anything to do with hume sexuality and mating rituals and has read her that way from jump, and that is part of the growth of their partnership.)

(Oh, hi, sorry for the stampede of teal deer! This prompt was magnificently thinky for me, as you can likely tell!)

I LOVED this, and I love the term "grownup orphans" for these two, as well as your thought stampede, haha! Fran and Balthier's partnership was one of my favorite parts of FFXII-- I love them to death and I think you wrote them beautifully here, and much as I also imagine them to be.

Oh, wow!!! Thanks so much! The idea of them as "grownup orphans" came to me midway through the fic, as I realized just how similar their experiences were on some levels, having estranged themselves from their respective homes because of something they Just Couldn't Live With. But that doesn't mean they don't love them--- but I think it also informs the home and family they've made with each other, as does the differences between their situations. (Fran, as she puts it, is probably not ever going to have to burn down her forest.)

I'm SO GLAD you like it!!!!! Like I said above, this was a really splendid prompt for me, having just played that part of FFXII--- and while I did see the um, more explicit possible reading of "your forest", I just had to go for the tender-and-sentimental one with these two, because they are such a partnership, and because Balthier's hidden depths (the ones he tries valiantly to keep the rest of the world from seeing) are one of my happy places in this fandom.

Oh, wow, thanks! They are such a... nonstandard... relationship, in that Square Enix didn't take any of the easy ways out with them, nor in-universe do they seem to have taken them with each other, and I love them dearly and was glad of a prompt that let me play with them. (Left to myself in this fandom, I wander around in all the permutations and combinations of getting Ashe and Vayne to have something resembling a consensual relationship, as witness my prompts, lol.)
