RULES

There should be kissing! All kinds of kisses are welcome: gen, shippy, smutty, chaste, familial, friendly, angry, happy! We’re pretty open to anything you want to call kissing. We are fans of all of it.

Fanart, fanfiction, drabbles, doodles, live action movies -- whatever you want to supply, we’d like to have it.

Be kind to others regarding character or ship choices and prompts. This should be fun for everyone!

FINAL FANTASY KISS BATTLE 2015

We will be running the Kiss Battle on Dreamwidth only. There are two main reasons for this: 1) Dreamwidth’s comment limit is huge, allowing for longer kissing masterpieces; and 2) Dreamwidth still supports subject lines for comments, which are vital to a meme like the Kiss Battle. However, the Battle is open to everyone. Feel free to participate with your Dreamwidth (account creation is invite-free right now~!), your Livejournal or other OpenID account (see here if you want to set up an OpenID), or anonymously.

"It doesn't mean anything."

"Why doesn't it mean anything?" Edgar asked, his face scrunching up in a heartbreaking mixture of confusion and hurt.

Locke shrugged, face devoid of emotion and movements robotic. He'd been this way for a long time. Longer than Edgar liked to admit. "Nothing means anything," he said quietly. Edgar watched his lips as he spoke; they were still wet from when Edgar had been denied. "Not until the Empire pays for what they did."

"Vengeance won't--"

"It will. It has to," he added in a smaller voice. "Because it has to stop hurting." His leather gloves whispered against each other as he wrung his hands. "Please tell me it will stop hurting."

The kiss had been Edgar's coup de grace. Talking hadn't worked--nor had hugs, feasts, or elaborate treasure-hunting escapades. Edgar could no longer bear to see Locke sink any deeper. He leaned forward, kissing him softly on the forehead. The bandana was rough and worn against his lips--Locke's hair greasy against his fingertips.

"It won't," Edgar told him when he pulled back. "But it will hurt less."

I love moments in which Edgar & Locke commiserate and comfort each other - they both put up such fronts before everyone else to hide their emotions, and I can see them growing close because of it. Great fic :)

The first time that it happened was after a late-night commiseration party of two over a bottle of Kohlingen whiskey. Loneliness plus liquor make for a dangerous mix; Edgar missed his brother, Locke grieved for his lover. But then a sympathetic arm around the shoulders was followed by a turn of the head and the brush of lips together…

They tell themselves that it doesn’t mean anything. A warm body is a warm body, especially on those bitter cold nights in the desert when even the steel walls of Figaro Castle do little to keep out the chill.

Edgar still liked girls, but if anyone could keep a secret, it was Locke. Besides, it was only once in a while, out of a need for comfort in moments of anxiety and sadness. Locke was a good friend, and not that bad of a kisser, and Edgar felt that Locke needed a little comfort as much as he did.

It wasn’t anything like love. It didn’t mean anything, Edgar told himself, as he watched Locke kiss Celes on the bow of the airship.

I feel vaguely spoiled that I got two fills for this prompt on (apparently) the same day. XP

So bittersweet! I've always sort of mentally separated Locke's friendship/relationship with Edgar and his later one with Celes, but this is a great peek into Edgar's perspective of the transition. I can definitely see him getting a little hurt and feeling replaced, after having had some intimacy with Locke. That last line is really a punch to the gut. Nice work!

Love it! Such a bittersweet look at the pairing, and I like how you wrote Edgar's rationalization of the situation and his denial of hurt.
