December/January: Small Fandoms & Final Fantasy Creatures!

DOINK! Chocobo Races 2014
December/January - Small Fandoms & Final Fantasy Creatures!

Administrative Bits
  • If you haven't yet chosen your team, make sure you sign up here on the 2014 roster if you want your work to count for points!
  • Confused? Need a refresher on the rules? Wondering how to post? Get more information about the Chocobo Races here.
  • You can browse and fill prompts from the Chocobo Down list at any time!

For the next two months, you are encouraged to:
  • Create fanwork for canons within the series that have smaller fandoms!
  • Create fanwork that centers around any of the unique creatures of the Final Fantasy series!
    • This includes any summons, monsters, animal companions, and non-hume/human races. You could even interpret the theme to include old-school status effects that affect humanoid appearance, like Toad and Imp!
    • As a guideline, if you would like to use this theme to feature main cast members who are generally treated as "characters" over "creatures" (such as Fran or Kimahri), consider making the focus of your work something to do with their background or experience as non-human.
  • It's fine to choose one theme or the other — there's no requirement to combine them, but you can if you want!

If you have any questions, please leave them on this post!

How will the scoring go?
  • Any work that prominently features any Final Fantasy Creatures will receive 10 points.
  • Any work submitted for Small Fandoms - FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV (and TAY), FFV and Legend of the Crystals, FFVI, FFIX, FFXI, VS, all Tactics games, FFXIV, FF: TSW, FFU, FF: MQ, FF: 4 Heroes, all Crystal Chronicles games - will be worth 10 points each.
  • Any work that fulfills both themes at once - that is, Creatures from a Small Fandom! - will receive 15 points.
  • Any work that doesn't fit either the Small Fandoms or Final Fantasy Creatures themes, but is submitted in December or January, will still receive 5 points.
  • Don't forget we also now award bonus points for works that go above and beyond the call of duty! The following applies to ALL works, whether they fit the theme or not:
    • +5 points for every 5000 words of a single fic
    • +5 points for extensive coloring or shading in a picture
    • +5 points for complexity within a single picture; i.e. backgrounds or multiple characters
    • +5 points for multi-paneled comics
  • Remember that you have to be signed up for a team before you post your work in order to get points.

What prompts are eligible for this month?

Some reminders for this round:
  • Please include the prompt you are filling somewhere when you post your work!
  • Since the mods can't guarantee we have the time to look at every work ourselves, please make sure you label your work appropriately, so that we know who gets bonus points and who doesn't!

What if there isn't anything in the Chocobo Down Database that I want to create for? What if I want to ask for something else?

You can leave any prompts that fit one or both of the current themes in the comments to this post! You don’t have to be on a team to leave a prompt, but you do have to sign up if you want to receive points for filling one.

To leave a new prompt:
  • Please put the most important relevant information in the subject of the comment, such as canon, character/ship, and/or creature. FFIV TAY: Palom/Ursula, or FFV: Faris & Syldra, or FFXII: Rogue Tomato are examples.
  • Leave the details of your prompt in the comment. "Anything goes" usually isn't as helpful as you'd think - even if it's true! - so please try to add some optional details or ideas for people who might want a pointer.
  • You can leave as many prompts as you wish, although we would ask you to stick to 5 prompts to keep things manageable. If you manage to fill someone's Small Fandoms or Final Fantasy Creatures wish, however, feel free to come leave as many prompts as you want!

Have fun, good luck, and prompt away!

FFXII: Mandragoras

[personal profile] vrazdova 2014-12-02 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I know "anything goes" isn't supposed to be a prompt but... anything involving the Mandragoras (and by that I mean any of the related plant-type monsters, like Alraune, Pumpkin Head, etc.). THEY'RE SO CUTE I CAN'T STAND IT D:

- Political unrest among the Mandragora royals!
- Is true love really possible between a Mandragora and a Cactoid?
- A ridiculous parody of a fairy tale or kid's story featuring Mandragoras
- A Mandragora has been following Vaan's party around, unnoticed, and thinks HE's actually the leading man

Any canon (IV, VI, IX or X preferred): Summons

[personal profile] monsterboy 2014-12-10 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything to do with the non-human experiences of summons, and how those experiences feel for them. Ideas:

- What does it feel like to be summoned? Do the summons feel pain (emotional or physical) when pulled from their lands, or when forced to go back to them?
- Do summons see themselves as gods, as below gods, as above humans, as below humans - or as something without a category?
- Do summons have humanlike emotions, or different emotions? Do they have names for their emotions? Do they have emotions related to magic or summoning?

Special bonus for Yuna/Valefor, because I ship it like burning.

I've written something inspired by this prompt, but it's a crossover (VI and IX), and before posting, I wanted to check whether you'd be OK with that. Thanks!

I would love to see it! Crossovers are A-okay.

Fire and Will (FFVI/FFIX, Esper!Terra &Garnet)

[personal profile] sidonie 2014-12-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
When Terra feels the summoning pull her back across the gulf between worlds, she answers, but she does not answer gently. She burns across the sky in a meteoric arc, haloed by fire, shearing down through the clouds with the heft of Ragnarok in her hand.

The one who called her stands at cliff's edge, unshaken. Meets her eyes. Says her name.

She does not touch down to earth, does not breathe or smile or speak. It is only by this other's strength that she is here at all, and the summoning and binding resonates beneath her skin, into muscle and bone, except - she is not, she has neither, only air and fire and will. And this human, this proud young mage with the temerity to call herself summoner - this one who calls herself queen - steps forward once, wrapped up in magic, her dark hair lifted behind her in the rising wind. She is heedless in her audacity, and very dangerous, as proud young powerful humans always are.

There are stories that say Odin loved a queen once, long ago. They claim he served her willing, knelt before her and pledged all his strength to her defense, and Terra knows that this is true. She has seen the weeds where that castle used to stand, growing up through cracks in the tiled floors, and the memories that once clung to the stone like mist and did not dissipate with the day's heat. Now even those weeds are gone, this world changed beyond comprehension while she was elsewhere, but the memory remains.

Terra does not serve willing and does not kneel. They told her once that she had been born to the service of empire, and she had sworn that she would not serve again. But when this new land's queen reaches out to her, echo and invocation and the answering thread of magic, what fills her mind is not the rusty taste of magitek or the gleaming sterility of Vector's labs, but a desert city, pennants of green and gold above an ocean of sand and the slow rumble of machinery beneath the earth.

It's enough, that memory, to stay her hand and her anger. She lowers the blade. She does not strike.

"I am Garnet," the queen says, or perhaps, "I am Dagger." The thoughts are tangled together in her mind, layered so close that one has no meaning without the other. Odin is bound to her, and Shiva, and Bahamut. Others.

I do not serve. I am not yours.

"I know that," Garnet-who-is-Dagger says, or thinks.

I will not conquer for you.

I would not ask it, she says, and there is an image unbidden, the memory of a city burning, white towers backlit by flame. Will you defend?"

And Terra remembers sand and stone, human things she had known once, kingdoms dead for centuries. The images are startling in their intensity, stronger here in the physical world. They will not leave her be. Magic sears through her and gives her form, but with the sun's heat falling heavy upon her shoulders and the wind whipping back her mane, it is not so easy to forget that she too had once been half human, with people to protect.

She had been given the choice, once, to walk away from the world; now the world has called her back, and the choice is hers again.

I will, she says, and Summoner-Queen-Garnet-Dagger bows her head as she completes the binding, not in veneration but respect.

(I don't know if this is what you were hoping for, but I hope this prompt gets multiple fills regardless because I'd love to read them.)

Re: Fire and Will (FFVI/FFIX, Esper!Terra &Garnet)

[personal profile] monsterboy 2014-12-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhh. Oh oh oh oh.

This is... well, I don't know if I could rightly say I was hoping for it, because I couldn't have possibly imagined it. But it's unique and brilliant and hhhhh Esper!Terra as a summon and yes. Please. Thank you.

I think I have to go lay down now. *thud*

(Edit: Okay, more coherent response: I love the blurring of identities here. The blurring of worlds, the blurring of Dagger's selves as Dagger and Garnet and Queen and Summoner and how these are unique things but also inseparable, and the shifting of roles because Terra won't bow and Garnet respects and hnnngh.

Also how Terra is fierce and proud and alien and ready to fight, because that's how I like her best, and how Garnet is fierce too and neither of them actually have to be violent right then and there to show it.

Also did I mention Terra becoming a summon after her human half dies(?), which I'd never thought of before despite having loved FFVI for decades and having RPed Terra a lot and suddenly ALL NEW HEADCANONS.

But yes. Thank you so much for this, if the above didn't make that clear.)

[personal profile] sidonie 2014-12-12 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I also love the idea of the espers and Terra as proud and fierce and alien, so I'm definitely happy that came through here, and Terra becoming a summon after her human half dies is exactly what I was going for. It's a headcanon I've had for a while, and with Terra's history, I suspect she would not be happy to be used as a weapon the way summons usually are. Add to that the fact that Terra and Garnet both had storylines that were very much about self-discovery and being used as weapons before coming into their own strength, and I thought it would be interesting if they ever met as summon and summoner. Anyway, I'm really glad you liked it, and thanks again!

A last minute fill for you. I probably did not hit any of the things you wanted at length, but I hope you like it anyways!

Ahhh, this is lovely! I mean, yes, it goes in a mostly different direction from what I was looking for, but it's still lovely, and I'm honoured you took the time to write it for me!

Bahamut's calm, frank nature is perfectly present. And "the tug of a summons on the chains of his soul", as well as the very last line, gave me shivers. Good stuff. ♥

I'm glad you enjoyed it, even if it didn't quite tickle your fancy!

(That last line may have been floating in my head for a while now, completely unrelated to FFX. Thank you for giving me a chance to excise it from my brain with your lovely prompt!) :D
monsterboy: A Final Fantasy Behemoth, looking nervous and puppy-like. (behemoth - nervous)

Any canon: Behemoths

[personal profile] monsterboy 2014-12-10 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, behemoths. Because I love them.

Are they actually mammalian, or are they something else? Do they have societies, packs, group hunts? Some of them have magic, so where did they learn it? Why do the ones in XIII wear leather?
stealth_noodle: The imp (kappa) from Final Fantasy 6. (imp)

Any canon: Chupon

[personal profile] stealth_noodle 2014-12-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Solve a plot hole or tie off a loose thread with Chupon! How did Yang survive the canon explosion? Clearly he was sneezed to safety. How does the Time Loop work? Time flows endlessly from one of Chupon's mouths to the other. Anyone's unmentioned mystery parent? Chupon.
stealth_noodle: A Cactuar running to the right. (cactuar)

FFIV: Pig status ailment

[personal profile] stealth_noodle 2014-12-16 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Used creatively, the pig status ailment is great for espionage.
stealth_noodle: Garland from Final Fantasy, preparing to knock you all down. (garland)

FFI: Bahamut

[personal profile] stealth_noodle 2014-12-16 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
There's a story behind why the dragons use a rat's tail as a symbol of courage.
stealth_noodle: Rydia from Final Fantasy 4, peering upward. (rydia)

FFIV: Hummingways

What's their relationship to the Lunarians? Did they stow away? Did they arrive on their own tiny spaceship? Are they pets that got loose and rapidly evolved through moon magic? Do the Lunarians think of them as fellow moon residents, pests, or something else?
