FINAL FANTASY KISS BATTLE 2014
We will be running the Kissing Battle on Dreamwidth only. There are two main reasons for this: 1) Dreamwidth’s comment limit is huge, allowing for longer kissing masterpieces; and 2) Dreamwidth still supports subject lines for comments, which are vital to a meme like the Kiss Battle. However, the Battle is open to everyone. Feel free to participate with your Dreamwidth (account creation is invite-free right now~!), your Livejournal or other OpenID account (see here if you want to set up an OpenID), or anonymously.
Have fun! Get smoochin'!

"Heaven & Earth" (FFI; Bahamut/Tiamat)
"Am I?" Bahamut stretches out his impressive wingspan. His tail curls around, attempting to stroke one of the lesser maws, but Tiamat's own tail comes down with a heavy thump, trapping his against the floor. "And darkening the Orbs, taking up residence in the Sky Palace ... these are not meddlesome to mortal men?"
"You serve them," she growls. The lesser heads hiss in agreement.
"I reward them," Bahamut says. "You serve them."
"LIES!" The throne room rattles with the force of her shout. In two powerful strides, Tiamat is before him in all her glory--immense, angry, all teeth and claws. "I am the Mother of All Dragons!"
"And I am their King," Bahamut says evenly. "I reward those worthy enough to pass my trails, and you...? You help a man become a god. So I suppose you are correct: you do not serve man; you serve a man."
Tiamat's great head looms over him. When she breathes, electricity crackles with her exhalations. "You will leave, Hallowed Father. Before I forget our truce. Return to the rat holes from which you came."
"As you wish, Mother of All Dragons." Before he does, nips her--gently, on the soft skin of her throat. When he does so, he is prepared for the consequences. He is prepared to die fighting--Tiamat, Warmech, or Chaos himself.
But she only nips him back, just as affectionately. She turns her back on him, a clear dismissal. Bahamut folds his wings in and leaves.

"Two if by Sea" (FFI; Red Mage/White Mage)
"Let me out," he says, trying to shove at the door. He takes a deep, shaky breath, acutely aware of the sweat running down the back of his neck.
"Hold," Gaul says in surprise, snatching at his wrist. "Are you mad?"
"We haven't used the Oxyale yet," Almya points out. She hefts the chalice as best she can, pressed between Gaul and the wall as she is.
But Clef feels tinier than ever, crushed on all sides by an ever-enclosing ocean. "I, I can't." He swallows hard, stomach rolling in waves of both nausea and humiliation.
"We're almost there," Ulren says. His voice is the most soothing--gentle and without judgment or urgency. To Almya he says, "Give me some of that."
"I suppose it figures. He wasn't any good on the ship; why would this be any different?"
Her voice sounds tinny over the rush of blood to his head. Clef squeezes his eyes shut, but opens them once Ulren has maneuvered over by his side. "Drink this."
Oxyale is air and water combined, but its texture is nothing like Clef had imagined. It's thick and viscous, sliding down his throat with a sharp coolness and chills him to the bone. It leaves his lips sticky with a blue-silver gloss.
"You can breathe underwater," Ulren tells him quietly. His own lips are tinged blue, and Clef watches him wordlessly hand the chalice to Gaul.
"I can breathe underwater," Clef echoes, clutching at Ulren's robes.
Ulren nods. "You'll be fine." He leans forward, closing the distance between them. The kiss begins softly, chilled by the Oxyale on their lips, but nervousness and desperation prompts Clef to pull Ulren even closer. The Oxyale tastes vaguely metallic, but Clef sucks it from Ulren's tongue even as the other tangles his fingers in Clef's hair.
Almya is laughing about how they don't have time for this. Gaul is grumbling about how they don't have time for this. Then the barrel strikes the Sunken Shrine floor and they all fall out.

FFI: Elf Prince/Darryl
FFI: Sara & Bahamut
Wings (FFI; Sara, Bahamut; G)
It is Garland's fault, but it is Merewyn who suggests it: Merewyn, her Knight, the only Light Warrior who stayed with her. Merewyn has eyes that are older than time, and intuition sharper than her blade. "There is a cave," Merewyn says, and her solemn face looks almost wistful: "a cave, and a dragon, who can give you the strength to become who you are meant to be."
"Can you take me?" Sara asks, already knowing the answer.
Merewyn gives her mysterious smile, the one that reminds Sara off the lands and worlds she has not yet seen. "I will," says her Knight. "I will take you there. But you must face Him on your own."
Their departure almost - almost - hushes the rush of restlessness within Sara: the solitude, the fierceness of Merewyn's blade, the simple joy when her own arrows hit their targets. And yet there's still something burning, low at night, a guttering and undying flame. It is still Garland's fault, Sara thinks.
Merewyn stops at the entrance to the cavern, smiling her mysterious thousand-league smile. Sara proceeds into the darkness, feeling strangely caught-between: anxious but not afraid; anticipatory but not confident; solid, but not fearless.
The dragon rears before her out of nowhere and its brightness blinds her, searing its image on her eyes: coils and coils of gleaming jewels, sharper and brighter than anything could ever exist, shimmering with a magic that makes them only look like scales. His wings spread behind Him, veined and laced with metals still molten and warm from the earth, fire-lines, and Sara catches a sob in her throat at the wonder.
"Princess," He says, and rumbling in the echoes of His voice Sara hears the name: Bahamut, Hallowed Father, Dragon-King, First-Sire, Zero and Infinite, Guardian, Keeper, Monster-God... They all sound the same and mean the same thing and Sara grasps at them, forming the letters in her mouth.
"Lord Bahamut." She greets him with her deepest curtsey, her most reverent gesture: she has nothing else to offer him.
"Princess," Bahamut says. "You bring me naught from the Trials - but you have borne trials all your own, and for that, I would listen. What is your desire?"
"I would," Sara says, and she finds she has no words to describe her small, petty, insignificant restlessness in the face of the dragon. "I would learn my role, and become it."
There is a terrifying rumble like an earthquake, like a cataclysm, like the world ending: Bahamut laughs. "Learn your role, Princess? When Princesses are ready, they become Queens. What is your desire?"
"I would be more," Sara says, not knowing until the words have poured from her mouth that this is as close as she will get to putting letters on her unspoken dreams. "I am no brave warrior like Merewyn; nor can I pull lightning from the skies like Birch, or pull life from death like Pan, but I would be more than a symbol and a crown."
The noise He makes is almost a purr, a deep vibration beneath her feet: dangerous amusement. "And what would you be?"
Sara laughs, brittle and short, because there is only one way she can describe it. "I would be you," she means to say, but the words that come out of her mouth are: "I would be yours."
Bahamut's eyes blaze: diamonds, suns, stars, molten heat of the earth; Sara would stumble, but Bahamut rears up before her and spreads His wings, and she wonders whether He will simply strike her down for impunity: but then He laughs again, an infinitely smaller noise made for a human to understand. "That, Princess," Bahamut says. "That I will hear."
The dragon's kiss upon her forehead is like being struck with a spear: so cold it burns, so sharp it merely stings.
Speak my name, Bahamut tells her. Speak but my Name, and I shall come to you, and we will Fly.

FFI: Garland/Any Light Warrior
"Captive Audience" (FFI; Garland/Warrior; creep factor, PG13)
Behind him, the princess is weeping--but they are not tears of despair. She is angry; her own attempts at escape had been as pitiful as this rescue mission. Garland can hear the hopelessness in her sobs. Still, unleashing more than the Light Warriors could handle was only delaying his plan.
His gaze returns to the statue of the warrior woman. In this human form, his magic is not strong enough to last forever. Before long, the stone will become flesh and the Light Warrior will retreat to rejoin her friends. Or perhaps she will attack him immediately, still lose in the throes of her last battle.
She looks ready to attack right now, frozen in the ready stance that she is. Her armor is crudely basic and her weapon is laughable, but she makes up for it all with her strength and tenacity. Garland remembers that she had taken the spell for one of the mages; an admirable quality in a knight. However, her petrification had left her party without a solid offensive, and they'd had no choice but to retreat.
So now Garland must wait. For the spell to fade. For the other Warriors to return. For his journey through time to begin.
He strokes the warrior's face, gloves scraping a little over the smooth stone. He wonders if she is still conscious in there. Perhaps she wonders why he has not simply shattered her into a thousand pieces.
No. Not yet.
"Another time," he murmurs, kissing the dry, rough statue on the lips. "I will kill you all ... when the time is right." He kisses her again, smiling as he feels the enchantment begin to fade.

FFI: Sara/Matoya
"We'll Start In the Morning", FFI: Sara/Matoya, G
"There, there, dear," Matoya clucks, plying her with yet another potion. "You did well enough, getting yourself away from that Garland fellow without any help, after all."
Sara clutches at the blanket the good witch had given her to replace the tatters her clothing had become in her flight from Garland's keeping. "That's not good enough," she says, shivering with more than cold and damp. "I want..." she takes a swig of the potion. "I want it never to happen again." Another gulp. "I want to be strong enough that it never happens again."
Matoya starts to make another clucking noise, then stops and looks at her, hard. "You really mean that, don't you, child."
"Yes." Sara takes another drink of the potion, then sets it aside to look Matoya in the eyes. "More than anything."
Matoya's chuckle this time is not altogether kindly, though it is thoughtful. "Well, then," she says, "that can be arranged. It won't be easy, mind you, but it can be done."
Sara snorts, most indelicately, and doesn't care one whit about sounding like a proper princess. "'Not easy' is kidnapped by a madman, and getting away. Being sure that it doesn't happen in the first place may not be easy now, but in the long run---"
This time Matoya's speculative look is much more benevolent. "Very well, child," she says, taking the now-empty potion bottle and coming to drop a kiss on Sara's forehead, like a mother. "We'll start in the morning."

"Spellbound" [FFI: Daryl/The Witch in Onrac; PG]
It's three weeks of keeping vigil at the docks before Daryl meets Onrac's resident witch. It occurs to her, after telling her story, that she had not thought this far ahead. She certainly had not factored in the witch's puzzled expression.
"By the Orbs' grace, why would you want to be human?"
Daryl allows herself to sink deeper into the sea, staring up at the witch with pleading eyes. "Dark times are coming. No one believes me. I want to get away before it's too late."
The witch quirks a fine eyebrow at her, looking dubious. "Dark times are coming up here, too. Legs or no legs, the end comes for all of us."
Daryl shakes her head violently. "The Fiends are stirring. The--the Kraken--you don't understand what he will do to us."
For a moment, she doesn't believe the witch even cares. But when Daryl risks a glance upward, she finds the witch considering her with a look of intense concentration. "I would have to cultivate special herbs to do as you ask. I couldn't even offer you a guarantee; perhaps I will give you legs that cannot walk."
"Then I will crawl on land," Daryl says, insistently. "Anything is preferable to crawling before the Fiend of Water."
The witch stares at her for a moment longer. "You truly fear for your life," she muses, kneeling by the edge of the dock. "Very well, mermaid. I will research this spell." She offers her hand.
Daryl takes it in both of her own and kisses it. "Thank you! I will make this up to you, I swear it."
"No need, mermaid," the witch says, squeezing one of her hands. "Return here on the next full moon, and I will give you escape you so desire. Just know that I cannot save you from the horrors of this world."
Daryl only replies, "But you've saved me from that one."
