  • Be sure to check back often -- new kissing action could be showing up everywhere!

  • Spread the word! Tell your friends!

FINAL FANTASY KISS BATTLE 2014

We will be running the Kissing Battle on Dreamwidth only. There are two main reasons for this: 1) Dreamwidth’s comment limit is huge, allowing for longer kissing masterpieces; and 2) Dreamwidth still supports subject lines for comments, which are vital to a meme like the Kiss Battle. However, the Battle is open to everyone. Feel free to participate with your Dreamwidth (account creation is invite-free right now~!), your Livejournal or other OpenID account (see here if you want to set up an OpenID), or anonymously.

Have fun! Get smoochin'!

Wings (FFI; Sara, Bahamut; G)

[personal profile] seventhe 2014-02-08 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It is Garland's fault, Sara thinks, all of it. It is Garland's fault she sits on this throne and feels no contentment; it is Garland's fault she can feel satisfied with her people's happiness but not her own. It is Garland's fault, this restlessness that seizes her in the night: the desire to move, to run, to fight; to fly, fly higher until the world is hers, her land protected not by crown and sword but the spread wings of Sara's ambitions and desires and dreams.

It is Garland's fault, but it is Merewyn who suggests it: Merewyn, her Knight, the only Light Warrior who stayed with her. Merewyn has eyes that are older than time, and intuition sharper than her blade. "There is a cave," Merewyn says, and her solemn face looks almost wistful: "a cave, and a dragon, who can give you the strength to become who you are meant to be."

"Can you take me?" Sara asks, already knowing the answer.

Merewyn gives her mysterious smile, the one that reminds Sara off the lands and worlds she has not yet seen. "I will," says her Knight. "I will take you there. But you must face Him on your own."

Their departure almost - almost - hushes the rush of restlessness within Sara: the solitude, the fierceness of Merewyn's blade, the simple joy when her own arrows hit their targets. And yet there's still something burning, low at night, a guttering and undying flame. It is still Garland's fault, Sara thinks.

Merewyn stops at the entrance to the cavern, smiling her mysterious thousand-league smile. Sara proceeds into the darkness, feeling strangely caught-between: anxious but not afraid; anticipatory but not confident; solid, but not fearless.

The dragon rears before her out of nowhere and its brightness blinds her, searing its image on her eyes: coils and coils of gleaming jewels, sharper and brighter than anything could ever exist, shimmering with a magic that makes them only look like scales. His wings spread behind Him, veined and laced with metals still molten and warm from the earth, fire-lines, and Sara catches a sob in her throat at the wonder.

"Princess," He says, and rumbling in the echoes of His voice Sara hears the name: Bahamut, Hallowed Father, Dragon-King, First-Sire, Zero and Infinite, Guardian, Keeper, Monster-God... They all sound the same and mean the same thing and Sara grasps at them, forming the letters in her mouth.

"Lord Bahamut." She greets him with her deepest curtsey, her most reverent gesture: she has nothing else to offer him.

"Princess," Bahamut says. "You bring me naught from the Trials - but you have borne trials all your own, and for that, I would listen. What is your desire?"

"I would," Sara says, and she finds she has no words to describe her small, petty, insignificant restlessness in the face of the dragon. "I would learn my role, and become it."

There is a terrifying rumble like an earthquake, like a cataclysm, like the world ending: Bahamut laughs. "Learn your role, Princess? When Princesses are ready, they become Queens. What is your desire?"

"I would be more," Sara says, not knowing until the words have poured from her mouth that this is as close as she will get to putting letters on her unspoken dreams. "I am no brave warrior like Merewyn; nor can I pull lightning from the skies like Birch, or pull life from death like Pan, but I would be more than a symbol and a crown."

The noise He makes is almost a purr, a deep vibration beneath her feet: dangerous amusement. "And what would you be?"

Sara laughs, brittle and short, because there is only one way she can describe it. "I would be you," she means to say, but the words that come out of her mouth are: "I would be yours."

Bahamut's eyes blaze: diamonds, suns, stars, molten heat of the earth; Sara would stumble, but Bahamut rears up before her and spreads His wings, and she wonders whether He will simply strike her down for impunity: but then He laughs again, an infinitely smaller noise made for a human to understand. "That, Princess," Bahamut says. "That I will hear."

The dragon's kiss upon her forehead is like being struck with a spear: so cold it burns, so sharp it merely stings.

Speak my name, Bahamut tells her. Speak but my Name, and I shall come to you, and we will Fly.

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, thanks so much! This AU is near and dear to my heart, but it's also a stone bitch to write, for all the reasons you mentioned--- between keeping track of Vayne's Plans B-H and his contingencies for all the sequelae thereof, and just the sheer heartbreak of watching these people circle each other with all their defenses up, it's one of those that I can only write so much of at a time. HOWEVER. Getting this encouragement to keep working with it was just the push I needed to get back to working on it! And also you paid me the compliment of subscribing to me and granting access! (Returned the favor, BTW.) In short, yay, I have an audience for this thing, that inspires me to make more of it!

Re: "Experimental Subject", FFVII OGC: Hojo/Vincent, PG because HOJO

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, thanks so much!!!! Hojo? ALWAYS BRINGS THE CREEPY. And never more when his personal life is involved. (One of the things I love the bestest about FFVII:CC is the way that it subtly evokes JUST HOW MESSED UP Sephiroth's childhood was, and how the messed-up can be laid AT HOJO'S DOORSTEP.)

Re: "Experimental Subject", FFVII OGC: Hojo/Vincent, PG because HOJO

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, thank YOU!!!! I am so glad it worked! Hojo being creepily "affectionate" out of the sheer pleasure of having such a perfect subject to work on just... made this write itself. Just his disgusting gloating glee.

And you picked my favorite line to love the best, too! That was so wonderfully awful to write, because on the one hand, hey, Turks disappear in the line of duty, all the time... but also, Hojo (the bastard) twisting the knife that, very specifically, Lucrecia won't miss him. (And, um, I had felt bad that I didn't get any gaslighting/mindfuck into the fic, but writing this, I realized that I potentially did, depending on what the reader wants to imagine of Vincent and Lucrecia's relationship in this 'verse. Whew!) Thank you for the messed up prompt, it was an awesome chance for character study!

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks so much! Lucrecia is one of my favorite FFVII characters, honestly--- badass lady scientists are Love Forever in my mind, and I love making her, you know, not the hapless victim of two men with varying obsessional tendencies and inappropriate boundaries? Snerk. Anyway, so glad you liked it, and honestly, the prompt handed me the sensory piece, all wrapped up with a bow! :D

Re: "Clinical Trial", FFVII OGC: Turk Vincent/Lucretia, G

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, thanks! And SOOOOOOOOO GLAD you like how I played with it--- I admit I first had the idea of Lucrecia being attracted to the scent of him, and then it hit me that it makes sense, especially in terms of giving her agency within the facts of canon, if her particular preference for "bad boys" expresses itself with men who are more like her, who share her interest in Doing! All! The! SCIENCE!, without anything like, um, ethics. (I'm a huge nerd about what research ethics would or wouldn't look like in FFVII; just like there's a mayor of Midgar but he's powerless, I can imagine that there might be rules kind of like our world has about what you can and can't do to living things, but then SHINRA. And people like Hojo and Lucrecia getting drawn to Shinra because they can let their ~*~creativity~*~ and curiosity off the leash, but then they've sold their souls/consciences for it and have to do as their corporate masters demand and produce whatever results they want (though in Hojo's case especially I'm not sure if he didn't just regard that as getting a bargain in the deal, since I don't see him as necessarily having a conscience to begin with, lol.)

Re: "Nerve", [FFVII: OGC] Cloud/Yuffie, G

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-08 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, thanks! I love Yuffie to BITS AND BITS, so I am glad she worked for you--- and I love her whole "flower of Wutai" schtick in canon, the way it subtly brings home how much her ego is tied up in her patriotism, her sense of herself and Wutai being bound up in each other, so that you loved that line of all makes me squee!

Blitzkiss! "Queen of Many Things", Sara/WoL, G

[personal profile] sathari 2014-02-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
She does not mark her time in Matoya's cave, under the great witch's tutelage, but when her teacher kisses her forehead again, for only the second time in her apprenticeship (the first at its inception) and says, "It is time for your to go forth, child," she does not question it.

Matoya is wise beyond Sara's reckoning; her father is on his deathbed, and she returns in time to accept the crown from his hands.

At her coronation, the Warriors of Light arrive.

She kisses their foreheads, each in turn, to grant them a witch-queen's blessing and guidance, and her leave to travel throughout the land of Cornelia, for a witch-queen's demenses have no need of heroes to defend them.

She will protect her lands as she may herself, for a queen's body and person belong always to her state as the state belongs to her, and the warriors will go forth to meet their destiny. That is as it should be.

When the fiends come, it is Queen Sara's powers that hold them at bay from Cornelia's borders. And though a part of her that remembers the girl who broke from Garland's grasp to become Matoya's apprentice longs to join the warriors in their quest, she knows that her place is here, to defend and not to bring the battle to the enemy.

There are others for that, and they are as the swords in her hands though she has no need of swords to wound. But they will fly true, and when they are done, whatever the outcome, she will hold Cornelia still.

That is the way of a witch-queen.

A/N: Also, here, have a link to me going to town on the idea of Ashe/Vayne where he is more of a tragic antihero than a pure villain, and also more with a scheming!Ashe!

"Clean" Tseng/Aeris, PG

[personal profile] nolifeinabox 2014-02-09 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
One of the first things Tseng remembers is grass; that light clean smell, crushed blades that left green smudges on his knees and the heels of his hands. When he tries to remember childhood, he can place the first time he missed a lesson and could not solve the math problems on the board when he returned. He can place the boat he and three other boys built one summer. He can place lighting lanterns when his cousin died. He can place the first few days of war. All in precise chronology; an orderly narrative line of how he came to be himself.

He cannot place grass. He cannot place clouds hanging in deep sky cut off only by the joyfully reaching hands of tree's, creeks rushing clear along winding paths, or his own hands clutching bark and pulling himself higher. These things are ubiquitous.

He's never forgotten his first language, and he's never forgotten the precise way light slants through leaves deep in the forests around Wutai.

Midgar had been a shock. All sharp lines and glass and concrete and white paint. Outwardly, above the plate everything was built for efficiency. For years, he had thought that bellow was only darkness cut through by neon signs.

Meeting Aeris at her home is an even greater shock. This time nostalgic, not alien. She'd recognized him, and after that first encounter, she hadn't been angry anymore. She invites him in and they drink weak tea. He asks about the garden, because it makes her whole being glow, and because he hadn't known there were any gaps in the plate where the sun could shine through. They maintain this routine for years. Eventually, they take their tea straight to the garden on bright days, so she can work, and he can watch.
When he asks her if he can help, she looks at him like he's grown a second head. But eventually she moves aside, lets him roll up his sleeves and kneel beside her, pulling at roots. His hands are not what they used to be, callouses suited for weapons. He helps pull weeds until his hands are raw, and his fingernails are full of dirt.

Once, when it had looked like everything he'd built was crumbling, only weeks before the order would come to bring her in, they got their fingers tangled in the roots of the same unwanted thing. It was strong, had gone unnoticed in the shade of a tree and it took both of them to drag it from the ground, clumps of soil showering both their clothes.

She'd made a laughing apology and kept hold of his hand, smiling broader and more serious when he'd brought her fingers to his lips. Her breath had hitched and fingers flexed when he'd flicked his tongue against her palm, tasting salt and dirt, the one clean thing in this entire filthy city.
