DOINK! Friending Meme!
We’ve always wanted to have a friending meme for Doink, but... in an exchange where gifts are surprises, and gifters and recipients are big secrets, it never seems like the right time. So we’d like to have one now! No one has to worry about ruining the big reveal, and we all get to have fun and make some friends!
If you’d like to participate, we’ve prepared some text you can copy and fill out to tell the community a little bit about yourself, where friends can find you, and which parts of Final Fantasy fandom make you sparkle like a happy Megalixir. Feel free to fill out as much or as little as you’d like - we encourage everybody to share their fandom likes and loves, so that you can connect with like-minded fans, but it isn’t necessary.
The way to play is quite simple:
Just two notes before we start:
Enjoy!

Feel free to fill out as much or as little as you’d like - we encourage everybody to share their fandom likes and loves, so that you can connect with like-minded fans, but it isn’t necessary.
The way to play is quite simple:
- Copy the text, fill it out, and leave a comment! We’ll have two posts, one for LJ and one for DW - if you’re looking for new friends in both places, feel free to fill both out.
- Scan the page and read about the Doink community! Does someone look interesting? Strike up a conversation! Make some friends! WRITE COMMENT FIC. Whatever you’d like!
- Add folks to your various friend networks as you desire!
- Repeat as needed.
- Everyone wins!
Just two notes before we start:
- This is not exclusive to Chocobo Down participants, or to Doink participants. It’s open to everyone! So please spread the word.
- We hope this doesn’t really need to be said, but please stay kind, positive, and respectful of everyone’s widely different kinds of fandom love.
Enjoy!

Journals (LJ, DW, etc) / AO3 username: This journal, my writing journal,
Other places I’m looking for awesome fandom friends: I have a Tumblr that I never seem to use, so... nothing right now.
FF canons I’ve experienced: The first FF game, on the NES, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, then IV (as II), VI, VII through X, and parts of XII, V, and Tactics. And the movie, and some of the Final Fantasy Legend games on the Gameboy, though I can't remember what series they really belonged to.
FF Fandoms I’m active in: FFVI, anymore. I've written for VII but basically dropped it around the time Advent Children came out. I'll probably be writing for IV once I finish it on the DS.
Ways I participate in fandom: Writing, reading, the occasional recs/linkdump from Pixiv, reaction posts sometimes as I'm playing or replaying games. I went inactive for several years, and only started writing again this year. I've been meaning to start posting scans from my doujinshi collection.
5 characters I love and one sentence why
1. Terra Branford, because she starts out so completely lost and confused (and I was right there with her, not even sure who all the people chasing her even were) and she comes so far and learns so much.
2. Edgar Figaro, because even though I can't write his middle name without giggling, I love his well-hidden sense of responsibility for pretty much everyone he knows.
3. Reeve Tuestie, because he was the one character in FF7 in a moral position I could understand - he's not a trained killer, he's not a terrorist, he's just a guy trying to do the right thing in a situation where it's nearly impossible.
4. Celes Chere, because she's such a badass, and yet you can see how much of it she had to adopt to handle the role she'd been groomed for; I love her combination of self-destructiveness and courage.
5. Balthier, for extremely shallow reasons. I haven't played the whole game and don't know much about him, but I fangirl the hell out of him.
5 pairings I love and one sentence why
1. Locke/Terra - My all-time OTP, I see Terra as really needing... not protection, because she's doing fine on her own, but someone who understands her background and is on her side, and Locke is the one who promised to be there for her and has known her the longest.
2. Setzer/Celes - He asks her to chase a dream with him, and she says she will.
3. Rude/Tifa - Because I think she's smart enough to see the benefits to someone who's solid and dependable, and he's admired her from a distance for a long time; if it doesn't get hung up at the very beginning with him seeing her as unapproachable, or her fixating on his Shinra past, I see them meshing really well.
4. Zidane/Garnet - I loved the way the game showed both of them growing up into people who could actually connect with each other.
5. Edward/Rydia - I'm starting to see it, courtesy of the DS remake; I especially liked her huffy thought that Edge is nothing like Edward.
Themes, kinks, tropes that I really love to see in Final Fantasy fanworks: Worldbuilding! So much worldbuilding! I love realistic takes on game mechanics, travel time, all of that. I'm a sucker for fanart that plays with the character designs somewhat while keeping them recognizable, and even (gasp!) tries out different clothes for the characters.
One ridiculous thought or question I have about FF and/or fandom, to start discussion with my new fandom friends: Everyone in these games always speaks the same language, uses the same currency, and 99% of them are apparently of the same race (barring occasional cultural differences in names, as in FFVI...) Anyone else want to think we're just seeing one small portion of the world and there are whole continents out there that just aren't on the map?
Anything else? I'm about 5,000 to 10,000 words away from my master's degree in library science, so I haven't been posting all that much lately, but when I have time I'm more active.

Heck yes. Especially in FFX, for some reason; it's totally my head canon that there are whole other cultures there on the other side of the world, but the Spiran continent got isolated when they gave up technology.

And yeah, totally. "The other side of the planet? Oh, that's just a bunch of anti-tech religious fundamentalists, best to steer clear of them." I bet the domination of Yevon has a lot to do with the people of Spira having the same language/culture/etc., because the Al-Bhed are not Yevonites and speak their own language, and one of the Guado says something about an "old Guado" language that pre-dates their conversion to the faith.

FFX really did have some of the best in-game worldbuilding in the series. (Says the woman who never finished X-2.)

It does help, yes. :D

I had never thought about it before, but that makes so much sense! (Just makes me wonder how they'd get there, since it seems it would have to be too far to fly even on an airship.)
no subject
The airships do complicate things, especially since they seem to have infinite fuel.

If there aren't other continents out there, we're either dealing with planets the size of itty-bitty moons (in which case WTF gravity) or planets that are almost entirely ocean, which... hmm. These worlds tend not to have polar ice caps, either.
Conclusion: every Final Fantasy setting is the result of catastrophic global warming.

So for FF6 the War of the Magi did it, clearly, and for FFX you could blame it on Sin. Maybe the Eidolons are keeping terrible secrets about IV's world.

I think that in some cases, that's very possible. In others... not so much. The other thing to remember is that on at least some of these worlds, they have been conquered by an almost global culture at some point, often in the near-recent past, and it could be that the language and currency are simply left-overs from that.

That definitely describes VII's Shinra conquest. I... didn't really love VIII, so would that be another under that heading?

Reeve is awesome, but sadly, there's really no point to play anything but the base game and Dirge of Cerberus if you're looking for Reeve stuff. Honestly, I got my Reeve fix from DC by reading the scripts and watching the cutscenes on youtube since I am terrible at FPS. He's in a few chapters of Before Crisis, but not too much. I think you're better off reading scripts for that one as well.
Just. Oh, Reeve. We need so much more Reeve love.

THIS.
Also, hi fellow librarian.

I'm already lamenting not taking Rydia to see Edward first chance I got.

You know, I did, but I forgot what happened. Clearly a replay is in order.

What servers, out of curiosity? I'm mostly Alliance on Cenarion Circle and Horde on Wyrmrest, but haven't had much time to play lately beyond poking my head in for Hallow's End.

Worldbuilding! So much worldbuilding!
Completely agree with you. I love fanfics that delve into the details.
