"Catch Fire", FFVI, Terra/Locke, G

[Note: contains some spoilers and a slightly alternate scene from the original game.]

Locke cannot fall. Not now, not when the Phoenix magicite, the treasure he spent years searching for, was just within reach.

But just as he scaled the fragile volcanic wall to reach the precious stone, the stone under his feet gave way, and the rocks gave way under his grip, and Locke began to fall to the lava below.

In those few terrible seconds, Locke felt his heart sink out of his chest. It was not because he was about to die. All of his friends were dead. There was no one left to remember him, no one left to mourn him. It was because he, once again, failed Rachael. He was so close to saving her. It was in his hand, and now he and the Phoenix were about to sink into the molten lava, both to be lost forever.

Locke was quickly engulfed in flame—pinkish-purple flame. He expected to burn, but he only felt warm all over. He was embraced by two strong arms, and he felt himself lifted upwards, flying.

And then, he heard a very familiar voice.

“Got him!”

Locke turned his head. Even in her fiery form, he knew that face in an instant.

“Terra?” Locke said. “I didn’t expect you to be the first face I saw when I died but I’m…OW!”

Terra bit his ear. “You’re not allowed to die. Not yet. We have unfinished business.”

Terra landed on stable, cool stone, as all of Locke’s friends quickly surrounded them, jubilant.

“Besides,” Terra gave Locke a solid kiss on the cheek, “you saved me once with I fell in a cave. Allow me to return the favor.”

Locke looked around him and he could not believe his eyes. His friends were all here, all alive. Then Locke looked to his hands and found the Phoenix magicite, safe in his hands.
